Like many others, the first time we heard ‘Hold’ by Vera Blue we were mesmerized. The Sydney based artist, Celia Pavey is starting to get a lot of attention in Australia, performing one of the best covers on popular radio station TripleJ and selling out a ring of local shows. We caught up with Vera ahead of her forthcoming EP  ‘Fingertips’ due for release on May 13th. We shot back and forth some quick fire questions about how her creative being formed, and the influences that helped shape her. Make sure to stay up to date with Vera Blue – she’s undoubtedly one to keep your ears and eyes close to.

It sounds like you’ve had a range of musical endeavours prior to Vera Blue, how did you come to the sound that you have now?

Just experimenting in the studio with some really talented and passionate people, drawing from other artists/bands e.g. Alt j, James Blake, FKA twigs and banks, as well as keeping musical roots of folk music.

What have been some of the stand out moments of the journey so far?

There are so many!! I guess special moments would be performing my music at sold out tours supporting matt Corby, doing a TripleJ ‘like a version,’ and spending time in the studio with the team creating music.

We got a taste of your forthcoming EP ‘Fingertips’ at your show but can you fill us in on your favourite moments on the EP?

I keep surprising myself with my vocal abilities when I fully let go emotionally. Gang vocal moments with the team are my favourite. So much fun.

Who is an upcoming artist you’ve got your eye on and what about them caught your attention?

Jack Garratt, I love everything, voice, lyrics, crazy production and vibe.

Did you enjoy your dinner at Jack’s Point in Queenstown and how was the company?

I absolutely loved it! Such a beautiful place I can’t wait to go back! Performing there was so special, being surrounded by mountains and water created such a cool vibe.

We have ‘Hold’ on repeat, who are you thinking about when you sing that?

This song is reflecting on a parting relationship…

We love how ‘Hold’ is minimalistic through the verses slowly adding layers into the chorus, how did this all come together in the studio with Gossling and Andy Mak?

We just wanted to keep the verse minimal so people could connect with the raw vocal and lyric. Then a blast in the chorus with lots of energy and vibe, lots of harmonies and vocals.

Is Vera Wang still your favourite perfume?

Nah, I now wear flower bomb, victor and rolf.

Apparently this in one of your first interviews for Vera Blue but you are no stranger to the media. What was it like coming from ‘instant fame’ on the voice and dealing with all the instant attention?

It was interesting but I handled it well, just stayed calm and grounded, I just wanted to make music and share it.

You are one of few artists that have been able to transition so well after being on a Music TV show, what do you think that comes down to?

I think it just comes down to having an open mind, giving myself time to develop as an artist, learn, collaborate and experiment with passionate artists, producers and writers.

We recently saw your feature in Harper’s Bazaar, you looked stunning. Who is your favourite fashion designer and how do they influence your visual direction?

Thank you!! That was so much fun! I love Alice McCall, I frolic around on stage in her designs and I just love how interesting her pieces are. Perfect really.

What is coming up for you this year and are there any long term plans you can share?

Releasing my EP ‘fingertips’ on the 13th of May, loads of touring, my own tours and more supports. Traveling and recording new music.

What are 3 of the top tracks you have been listening to the last few months?
