Vanguard One –‘Parabola’

In a basement somewhere in Auckland’s southern fringe, Ben Bartlett is bleeding all over costly synths to create his own brand of electronic emotional catharsis, or as he more eloquently calls it, “f**ked up dance music”.

Parabola is the pivot point for Bartlett’s first outing under the name Vanguard One; all pacing grainy beats, synthetic sirens in the distance and an otherworldly female alter-ego insisting he’ll “see all things in time.”

“Overtly emotional music has always interested me.” says Bartlett, “I grew up on Trance and World Music of the 90’s, but I fell victim to a few years of being a clichéd over-earnest acoustic singer songwriter. Vanguard is me throwing that all in a can.”

“I’ve been buying new analog synths and learning to use them, the drum parts are there for function mostly, rarely being too complicated because I only really want people to be able to find a beat. I used to want to just make the loudest deepest angriest sound possible, but then I also wanted to connect with people, so I now balance that line.”
